The short stay of Imam Reza (pbuh) in the city of Merv was under the political compulsion of the Abbasid Caliphate, but it resulted in a series of religious and cultural activities in that area. This research uses a descriptive-analytical method to review the major cultural outcomes of the Imam’s presence there and to examine instances of his social and intellectual activities. His most important cultural acts are found to have been speculative debates with the followers of various religions and creeds, elucidation of the Imamate position, semantic corrections on religious concepts such as monotheism and asceticism, and teachings in different domains such as lifestyle. These activities served to reinforce Shia theological foundations and introduce a pattern of religious rationality and dialogues among civilizations in a very complicated era in the history of the Muslim world. This denotes the continuation of the cultural approach adopted by the other Shia Imams.
